Treatments for Hyperparathyroidism
Surgery to remove the enlarged gland(s) is the only treatment for hyperparathyroidism (HPT) and cures over 95 percent of cases. The growth typically does not return and symptoms usually disappear after the first month of surgery. Parathyroid glands rarely develop cancer. An enlarged parathyroid gland must be removed because it increases calcium in the blood. Medication cannot control the calcium levels. Surgery is the only treatment. People can function normally with only half of 1 parathyroid gland.

Standard parathyroid surgery requires a 6 to 8 inch incision in the lower part of the neck. Dr. Baskies specializes in the preferred alternative treatment called minimally invasive radio guided parathyroid surgery (MIRP) and uses a special probe to locate the diseased gland. MIRP requires only a 1 inch incision.
